SpeakUp Survey
If you have time to fill out this SpeakUp Survey, please do. This survey is about your child's education and your ideas about how your school is using technology to improve your child's education. They are also interested in how you and your child use technology for learning and communicating at home.
This is your chance to voice your opinions and show the state what matters in your child's education! Please feel free to spread the word to others so we can make a difference!

Energy and Perimeter
Sorry for the long period of not posting! Now that conferences are starting to wrap up, I actually have time to blog! Here is a little recap of what we have been doing for the last 2 weeks from our guest bloggers this week on estimation and energy!
We are studying sound energy this week by doing various labs. In math, we learned about perimeter and how to calculate the missing length of an object using the perimeter. We will start time to the nearest minute after reviewing time to the closest 5 minute and hour.

Rounding, addition, subtraction, temperature and buoyancy
I hope everyone had a relaxing holiday! I am sorry for the late post this week! First off I want to say that I found the mistake "Follow by Email" feature. I have corrected it so please make sure you add your email again so that you can get the emails! I apologize and I'm glad with the help of one of you that I was able to figure it out!
We have done a lot of rounding and reviewed subtraction and addition! The kids finally got their "ah-ha" moment that they did learn to subtract with regrouping in 2nd grade! It took a lot of digging in the long term memory to remember it! :) We have also reviewed addition so I hope our kids remember with some friendly reminders! I know 3rd math has been harder due to more analytical word problems that we have the kids doing. I promise all the reading and the need to pay attention to detail will help them in the long run and on the STAAR test in the spring!
We have used Edmodo quite a bit in science to record temperatures around the world! I have posted some mystery pictures for the kids to guess to get their brain juices working! It is pretty cool to see what they guess based on a zoomed up picture of an object. They have enjoyed learning since Mrs. Skaggs and I have started using Edmodo! We love it! We also learned the about buoyancy by doing a sinking and floating lab. Did you know that a rubber band sinks?! I didn't until yesterday! It amazes me what I can still learn from 3rd grade science! We used this learning opportunity to have the kids work more on team building with an aluminum foil boat building contest! No actual prizes were rewarded of course because it was about how they work together as a team! They had a great time and seemed to enjoy the experience and learned more about why things sink and float.
I will upload the video blogs tomorrow when I get them uploaded from the iPads!
Happy Tuesday!

Rounding and States of Matter
We have been rounding to the nearest tens this week and reviewing place value up to the hundred thousands. The kids seem to understand it and will start rounding to the nearest hundreds soon.
In science, we have been doing labs on states of matter to review states of matter. They have had tons of fun with it and have seemed to enjoyed themselves!
Last week, Mrs. Skaggs and I started a program that allows us to integrate more technology into our classroom. We have decided to share with the kids how to globally communicate with others around us! To start off, we have started some team building exercises to allow the kids to be more open and respectful to each other's opinions. The kids have enjoyed using Edmodo so far! I will send out an email soon to the parents so that you can login and see what your children are writing as they respond to the questions and assignments that we post for them!
As promised, we have some new guest bloggers this week. Sorry for the video being upside down! I couldn't fix it but you get the idea! :)

Rounding and States of Matter
I want to apologize for making such a late post this week! It has been crazy trying to get ready for the field trip! I hope that your kids enjoyed the field trip to the Wortham Center watching Treasure Island. Here are a few post from the kids about what we learned last week in Math and Science. We did learn more than that but they seemed to have forgotten some details. :)
This week in math, we started rounding to the nearest tens. The kids have started using Odyssey in math. It's a great program that helps deepen their understanding on the topics that we've covered in class. We are continuing states of matter but concentrating on more solids.
Mrs. Skaggs and I are so excited to integrate technology into our classroom. We've introduced the kids to Edmodo, which is an educational social media site customized for our classroom where the kids can share and collaborate on ideas and opinions. The students have embraced it with open arms and seem to love it so far!

Guest Bloggers and this week...
This week, we will introduce the thousands period and compare 4 digit numbers. We will also be looking at number patterns in math. In science, we will start matter by reviewing solids, liquids, and gases. We will do a lab about the three states of matter.
We will be having our first problem solving and mad minute for a grade this week. Please have your kids practice their math facts daily for 10 minutes. We are practicing the steps of problem solving in math.
I am trying something new this year.
We're going to have guest bloggers to tell you what we've done in school this week. I hope you enjoy it! If you would like your child to be a guest blogger, please make sure you fill out a Parent Authorization Form from SBISD. It should have been sent home in the first Tuesday Folder on the first day of school.

Place Value and Science Safety/Tools
I hope that everyone had a great Labor Day weekend!
Last week, we reviewed place value up to 3 digits in math. It seems like most of the kids remembered it! In science last week, we covered science safety and made some very cute comic books on it as well.
This week, we will be ordering and comparing numbers 3 digits numbers in math. We will be practicing routines on how to work in math stations. In 3rd grade, we teach mostly in small groups. I will review with the kids the expectations I have of them when they are working in stations and how their work will be graded. The math stations work will be a completion grade and will be in the grade book. In science, we will discuss the different science tools we will be using throughout the year and then apply them with several experiments!
We are trying something new this year to pre-assess the kids on what the know on each unit that we are covering in 3rd grade. Before a unit, we will try to pre-assess them. Based on this pre-assessment, their weekly math stations work may be different from other students. It will be more challenging and rigorous based on their knowledge.
On Fridays, there will usually be a weekly math grade to assess the kids learning for the week. This will be part of their math grade as well.

Fabulous First Day!
We had a fantastic first day of school! I hope that your kids enjoyed their first day of 3rd grade as much as I did. I think we are going to have a terrific and exciting year!
I asked the kids to bring in a photo to describe their summer vacation. I wanted to display it on the bulletin board outside of our classroom for the first couple of weeks of school. If you can send a picture with them by Friday, I would greatly appreciate it!
For those of you that are interested in following my blog, there is a subscription button on the right hand side where you can submit your email. Whenever I have a new post, it will send you an email so that you do not have to check this on a daily basis. I will try my best to post weekly what we are learning in class or what we will be doing this week. Mrs. Skaggs' and I talked about having guest bloggers to also tell you what we're learning in the world of 3rd grade!
We will have an adventure in 3rd grade! :) Happy Monday!

Welcome to 3rd Grade!
I can't believe that summer is over and school is starting. How did it possibly go by so fast? I am so excited for the new school year. I hope everyone had a relaxing and exciting summer. We've traveled to London before the Olympics started, visited the Eiffel Tower, and watched the sunset in the French Riviera. I was starstruck by Sophia Vegara (Gloria on Modern Family) in Aspen and hiked the Rocky Mountains. I am so excited to hear about all the kids' adventures this summer!
